The Great Old Man Of India

Dadabhai Naoroji was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1825. He was a Parsi, a Zoroastrian community that originated in Persia.
He was a brilliant student and graduated from Elphinstone College in Bombay with a degree in mathematics and natural philosophy.
He then went on to study law in England, where he was called to the bar in 1856.
After returning to India, Naoroji worked as a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Elphinstone College.
He was also active in politics and was elected to the Bombay Municipal Corporation in 1862.
In 1867, Naoroji was elected to the Indian Legislative Council, the highest legislative body in British India.
He used his position in the Legislative Council to speak out against British rule and to demand greater rights for Indians.
In 1885, Naoroji founded the Indian National Congress, the first political party in India.
He served as the Congress's first president from 1885 to 1892.
Naoroji was a strong advocate for Indian self-rule and he traveled extensively to Britain and other countries to speak about the cause of Indian independence.
He was known as the "Grand Old Man of India" for his long and distinguished career in public service.
Naoroji died in Bombay in 1917 at the age of 92.
